Reader’s Question:

I learned from my friend that she needs SR22 Insurance in Chicago. What is this SR22 insurance? And why is my friend required to purchase that kind of insurance while I am not?

Maria

Chicago, IL

To clarify this matter Maria, I just want you to know that not everyone in the state of Illinois is required to have SR22 insurance. So the next big question is who needs to get this, to be more precise who needs to get SR22 insurance in Chicago?

I’ve done some research to make sure I’ll be giving you the correct information and found out the legalities involving SR22 insurance. From what I’ve learned, SR22 is a means for the state of Illinois to check the car insurance of “problem” drivers.

Going back to your question, you friend needs SR22 insurance in Chicago because of any of the following reasons:

  • She received unsatisfied judgment suspension
  • Her license is revoked
  • She received three or more traffic violations
  • Her license is suspended because she is caught driving without car insurance

The SR22 insurance is an insurance certificate or form which your friend’s car insurance company needs to submit to the Secretary of State in Springfield. This SR22 insurance form must meet the car insurance requirements in the state of Illinois which includes:

  • $20,000 bodily liability coverage/person killed or hurt in the accident
  • $40,000 to cover for two or more people killed or hurt in the accident
  • $15,000 to cover for damage in property
