The SR22 Illinois is a document showing proof that a certain person has auto insurance in the state of Illinois. Your insurance company will submit this SR22 certificate to the State Secretary in Springfield. Once received, you will get a copy from your insurer and a letter from the State of Secretary. The process for that could take up to 30 days.

You probably need this if your license has been suspended and you need to reinstate it. You may be asked to maintain SR22 insurance for a period of three years, but that may still change depending on the severity of your case.

It’s vital that you do not let your SR22 Illinois insurance get expired or cancelled because if it does, your insurance company will inform the Safety and Financial Responsibility Section through SR-26 Cancellation. Once they received SR26, your license will again be suspended and will only be reinstated once SR22 insurance has been filed on your behalf.

Meanwhile, if you do not like getting SR22 insurance, you may opt to file proof of financial responsibility through another method and that would be by depositing $55,000 in securities or cash through the Treasurer of the State. You can also file an approved by the court real state bond or a surety bond.
