Reader’s Question:
I received a quote for auto insurance, Springfield Illinois for $210/yr. After a week I went in and signed the auto insurance policy. The next day I received a call from an auto insurance agent saying that the underwriters changed the snowmobile policy on the previous Monday, between the quote and signing. The new quote under the new policy came in at a bit higher than the first quote. Am I entitled to the first auto insurance quote price since it was performed before the change took place?
Allan
Springfield, IL
I would suggest that you should check with the Illinois insurance regulator, Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI), to check what IL state insurance statutes have to say about your current situation.
Generally, when you are quoted an auto insurance rate Springfield Illinois, the auto insurance agent tells you how many days that specific rate is good for. If you came in within that time then you may have an issue with the insurance provider if they are stating it is their underwriting that changed rates and the rate change was not due to something they found out about you after issuing the auto insurance quote, such as your driving record was different then you stated in the application, etc.
The auto insurance agent in Springfield Illinois should be able to give you a satisfactory explanation for the increase in your premium. If you feel that your premium was intentionally quoted low in order to get your business, you should be able to file a formal complaint with the OCI.

Reader’s Question:
Hi, I live in Naperville Illinois. My question is: Does getting rate quotes in IL affect your credit score since the auto insurance companies check your credit history?
Jonas
Naperville, IL
Most auto insurance companies in Naperville IL do check credit scores when determining insurance rates. It is true that credit rating companies like Experian, Trans Union and Equifax have been known to use inquiries towards your credit report to impact your credit score. These queries that affect your credit score are queries for getting credit NOT inquiries that review your credit (like an auto insurance quote) or use credit as a portion of your insurance score.
The exact formula for calculating credit scores are closely guarded as secrets. Usually, most recently developed credit scores recognize when a person is shopping for auto insurance and either ignore multiple inquiries or count them as only one inquiry if they occur within a specific period of time.

Reader’s Question:
Can you be quoted on your parents’s auto insurance in Aurora Illinois as a driver if all you have is an learner’s permit?
Aurora, IL
The parents should be able to obtain a quote as to how much it will cost to add a driver with a learner’s permit to their auto insurance policy. This depends on the circumstances, the additional driver may have a certain time to get a regular driver’s license. In addition to that, if the parents add this additional driver to their policy, their rates may increase. However, there are auto insurance companies in Aurora IL that will add a driver with a learner’s permit and not increase the policy’s premiums.

Reader’s Question:
I just moved from Chicago IL to Tennessee. I was required to carry an SR22 auto insurance policy in Chicago Illinois. Do I have to continue carrying this sr22 since I’m now licensed in Tennessee?
Jenny
Charleston, TN
SR-22 auto insurance policy is used differently in various states. Generally an SR-22 auto insurance policy is an auto liability insurance policy required for reinstatement after your drivers license has been suspended or revoked. SR-22 auto insurance is uniquely suited for these kind of situations, since it requires the insurance providers to inform the department of motor vehicles if the policy is canceled, terminated, or lapses. If any of these things occur, typically your license will be suspended until the policy is brought current or reinstated. Under the laws in most states you should maintain SR-22 insurance for a certain period (usually three years) after the end of your suspension or revocation.
When you apply for a license in a different state, you will most likely need to continue with an SR22 insurance policy that you have in Chicago Illinois. You will have to check with DMV in Tennessee and Illinois to check if it is still required.
